LUKE DONNELLY insisted Alloa’s 5-0 hammering over Annan was a surefire confidence booster for his side.

Alloa’s number 9 was on exceptional form on Saturday as he scored two outrageous goals on each end of half time.

Donnelly linked up well with Scott Taggart twice for his two finishes – the first of which saw the striker take an awe-inspiring touch before rifling the ball into the roof of the net to score Alloa’s third.

He followed it up by dinking the keeper after another precise ball from Taggart, the ball lofted over Jamie Smith and in for the fourth of the afternoon.

Speaking to Advertiser Sport afterwards, Donnelly hailed the character of the team to bounce back from last week’s defeat against Arbroath.

“It was good team performance,” Donnelly said. “From start to finish, we were at it.

“We deserved our goals and it was a good win all in all.

“We’ve got a great group in there and even in games, we’re good at getting late goals so we’re good at coming back.

“All we can do is come out the next week and put things right and we did that today.”

Donnelly has become known for scoring tricky goals and this season has been no different.

His five goals this season have all been impressive finishes, harkening back to his performance against Dumbarton in particular.

The Annan game was more of the same, with the striker simplifying how impressive his finish was.

“When I got the ball over the top, I noticed the keeper was off his line and it was good to get two goals.

“The main thing is that the team win and I’m pretty happy with that.”

Earlier in the season, the manager and players had admitted they hadn’t been playing well for a full 90 minutes.

However, this week was a total performance from Alloa, who kept up their intensity from start to finish, topping it off with their fifth goal in stoppage time.

Donnelly insisted this was a big confidence booster for the Wasps, who will hope to keep this momentum against Queen of the South on Saturday.

He added: “The last few home games, we’ve lost a couple so it was good to bounce back.

“Before that, we had a few 1-0s so this was good for our confidence but at the end of the day, three points is three points.

“Scoring goals and playing like we did will only give us confidence, but it was only one win so hopefully we can take that into next week.”
