ALLOA RFC claimed the bragging rights in the first Clackmannanshire Derby in five years with a 10-19 win away to Hillfoots.

The Earlsfield club made the short trip to Tillicoultry to take on their rivals, slotting away three rapid tries early in the second half to put the tie to bed.

Alloa were bolstered by the additions of Martin McKenzie and Andrew MacTaggart to their ranks.

Foots started on the attack, however, and were the first to try and register points, with Andy Fraser’s kick from range falling just short.

The hosts eventually got their rewards, with Fraser making no mistake from the second time of asking to slot away his penalty.

The penalty was awarded after Ryan Butterworth was tackled around the neck by McKenzie, with the Alloa skipper sent to the sin bin as a result.

A tight, even first half saw Hillfoots go into the break ahead, but just by a margin of three points to nil.

Alloa came out the break flying and scored three quick-fire tries to take the lead, after Hillfoots switched off for 15 minutes.

Cammy Nimmo got the break of the ball and seared forward to open socring for his side, slotting the ball over to Jamie Cruickshank who squeezed over the corner.

Callum McAllister was next and he found a gap in the Foots’ defence to force over and score a sensational solo try.

Lee Cairney made no mistake following both tries to score the additional bonus points. Foots protested the second try as they were adamant McAllister had been tackled, the try stood.

Nimmo charged forward after a missed tackle and opened up space for Rab McCran to finish, adding Alloa’s third try.

The visitors missed the conversion though, but the three tries allowed Alloa to gain control of the game, with just 20 minutes left.

Foots resettled into the match though and Alloa gave away some cheap penalties, with the visitors’ frustrations growing.

Alloa’s frustrations came to a head as McKenzie was yellow carded for dissent towards the match official.

Foots capitalised on this and Callum Williamson notched a try of his own. Foots pushed for opportunities to equalise, but all they could grab was a potential bonus point with the last kick of the game.

Agonisingly for Foots, Gregor Manson’s effort drifted slightly wide, with the scoreline ending 10-19 in favour of the visitors.

In the end, Alloa grabbed the bragging rights, topping off a nice day with some family participation – as father and son Rab and Robbie Truesdale played together in Alloa colours.

Hillfoots RFC awarded Ryan Butterworth their man of the match, while Alloa named Gary Taylor as theirs.

The two sides will meet again on February 8 at Earlsfield, while Hillfoots are away to Bannockburn next week and Alloa host Glenrothes.
