KANE THOMSON is relishing the run of games he is getting at Alloa this season, insisting his confidence is only growing.
The youngster was one of Andy Graham’s first signings in the summer, coming in from Queen’s Park as a backup right back to Scott Taggart.
So far, the 20-year-old has clocked in 12 appearances for Alloa, becoming a reliable option for the manager if Taggart needs to feature as a centre half.
“It’s been really good,” Thomson said. “Start of the season, I was in and then I came out but I just want to play football.
“It’s good once you’re starting to build confidence, get a good run of games in and from my performances, I think I’m getting better every week.”
A key part of Thomson’s game has been his versatility, which saw him stand in at left back during Calum Waters’ dead leg.
Graham turned to Thomson as a backup, giving him a run of three games in a row on his unnatural side.
While he admitted it was a slight learning curve, Thomson grew into the role as the games went on, grabbing an assist for Conor Sammon against Kelty Hearts.
“I played on the left a bit last season at Queen’s Park,” Thomson went on. “That was in the reserves which is different playing there compared to now being in the men’s game.
“I was comfortable last season, it took a bit of getting used to, I’m predominantly more on the right-hand side.
“When I’m playing on the right, you can see I’m getting forward, I’m getting my crosses in the box as it’s my stronger side.
“I’m happy to play anywhere.”
Thomson returned to the team at right-back against Arbroath, playing a key role in the team progressing to the quarter-finals of the SPFL Trust Trophy.
He has caught the eyes of fans due to his burst of pace, utilising his engine to run up either wing and fire balls into the box.
He continued: “I’ve got a good burst of acceleration and pace and I feel my endurance is good as well, I can last for the full 90.
“Sometimes, I just need to pick and choose when to go rather than going all the time.
“With us only having the one-goal advantage, they’re going to have periods of the game where they throw everything at it especially towards the end.
“We’re comfortable, we’ve kept a lot of clean sheets this season so we were more than comfortable to deal with that sort of pressure.
“I’m pretty happy with how I play and using my pace to get down the line.”
The Wasps now look ahead to the SPFL Trust Trophy quarter-final draw, to be held on Wednesday, October 17 at 1pm.
Thomson’s former side Queen’s Park are still in, after their 4-1 win over Annan at the weekend, with the youngster insisting Alloa will be ready for whoever they face.
“I was watching the draw to see if we were going to get them or not,” Thomson added. “It’d be good to go back there.
“Whoever we get, we are prepared, we are ready to face whatever challenge we get and looking to progress as far as we can.”
