CAMMY O’DONNELL could be set for a change in Andy Graham’s setup, with the arrival of a new left back to the club.
As reported by the Advertiser, Alloa have re-signed Calum Waters from Greenock Morton, bringing the defender back to the club after a seven year absence.
With Euan Deveney moving on following his injury rehab, this initially left O’Donnell as the only left back at the club, until Waters was signed.
O’Donnell started providing cover at left back under Brian Rice, a role he continued to fulfil over the last full season as well.
Despite this, it is no secret that left back isn’t his natural position, O’Donnell instead preferring to play further up the pitch in midfield.
The boss had previously stated that a left back was a primary transfer target in the summer, with St Mirren loanee Ethan Sutherland having previously played there towards the end of the season.
Now, Andy Graham has provided an update on how the homegrown talent will factor into his plans for the season.
He said: “Ethan came in and did a fantastic job, he had great attacking attributes which we saw on show many a time.
“Cammy [O’Donnell] did a really good job at filling in there, but I’ve probably been unfair on Cammy in asking him to play a position that isn’t his own.
“It’s great that he can cover it, it’s a fantastic skill and attribute to be able to cover different positions and I think it’ll give Cammy licence to show us what he can do further forward.
“Cammy has done a great job filling in for us at times, but his main attributes are his attacking, it’s his delivery and quality on the ball.
“Cammy just needs that little bit of confidence and I hope he’ll get that now. Having him as cover at left back is fantastic as well.
“Being able to cover multiple positions is what will stand him in good stead going into his season.”
Waters’ signing for Alloa means that the club now has two players who can play at left back if required, padding out the defence for the season ahead.
Graham has placed his priority now in adding to his attacking options over the next few months.
