A TULLIBODY care home received a visit from a local historian, who discussed the history of Alloa Athletic with them for a day.

John Glencross, historian and programme editor for Alloa, paid a visit to The Orchard Care Home to meet with residents and chat about the illustrious history of the club.

Many of the residents are very into football and thoroughly enjoyed John’s visit, who brought a range of pictures to show people.

Alongside John was former Advertiser journalist John Simpson, who also shared photos with the group from his football days.

Sandra Curl, wellbeing coordinator for The Orchard Care Home, said: “The selection of wonderful pictures that John provided were made into a scrapbook, and he loves talking about it.

“It’s fascinating to hear his stories.”

John has also opened a football memorabilia museum in Alloa, which charts the club’s history from its origins to the present day.

Orchard resident Kathleen’s husband also served as the director and secretary of Alloa, enhancing links between the care home and the club.

Susan Gibson, home manager for The Orchard Care Home, added: “It is amazing that we have links to the local football club within our home, both present and from decades ago.

“We are big football fans at The Orchard and feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to visit and have a tour of the club.

“We are very much looking forward to our next trip.”

Three lucky residents also enjoyed a day out at Hampden Park, with one even getting to score a goal at Scotland’s national stadium.

Organised by Sandra, the football mad residents enjoyed a tour of the stadium on Tuesday, May 14.

Sandra got the idea after chatting with them and hearing about how much they loved football, contacting Stella Murphy, administration assistant at Football Memories Scotland, who gave the green light on the visit.

During the visit, Elsie managed to score a goal and Stuart had a great time looking through the museum’s old pictures.

The three were treated to a detailed tour of the dressing rooms, press rooms and on the pitch before exploring the museum.

Sandra said: “This was a huge success and we’re hoping to arrange another trip in the summer.

“Stella has also supported me with some football cards for reminiscing with our residents which has been a great topic for some of our group sessions and one-to-ones.”
