BRIAN MORGAN got his fairy tale ending as he scored the winner in the cup final to close the door on his career at Sauchie Juniors.

The skipper popped up at the back post with a strong header to fire his side back into the lead in extra time.

Sauchie had been pegged back to 2-2 in the dying seconds of regular time after holding the lead over Haddington since the 40th minute.

Morgan admitted this did knock the wind out of their sails, but hailed the strong mentality of the squad to bounce back from it.

He said: “We’ve had a poor season by our standards so to go out and win that today is outstanding.

“Being 2-1 up and then going 2-2 deflated us but we gave ourselves a dust down and a shake for extra time.

“For us to come out and get that winner, you couldn’t write it. Scoring the winner in the cup final for my last game as well, I’m just delighted.

“I’m buzzing for the boys, we work hard and they all show such commitment in training and in games.

“We dusted ourselves down and we let them back in, wee bit miscommunication at the back post and the ball comes in.

“It’s a great finish from the boy, composed and puts it in the back of the post.

“We’ve got a great mentality, we dusted ourselves down and kickstarted extra time like it was a new game.”

With the cup final now over, Morgan ends a long-standing career with Sauchie, closing the door on an exemplary time with the club.

His manager Fraser Duncan had previously said that they had set the goal of winning the League Cup as a send off for Morgan, which the club ultimately managed to do so.

He had announced his decision to leave, wanting to put more importance on his career and to avoid getting injured for work.

Having missed the last cup final that Sauchie won, he said this will live long in the memory for him and that he’ll be back at Beechwood as a fan.

He added: “I missed the cup final Sauchie won 10 years ago and I’ve never won one with them so to do that now, I’m absolutely buzzing.

“I’m sad -- it’ll be a big hole in my life but I need to put my health and my career first.

“I had an injury earlier in the season that put me off for 12 weeks and so I need to look at that.

“I don’t want to be bit-part, I’m the kind of player that is all in or nothing. If I’m playing, I want to be used.

“I’ll be up to watch them for sure, I’ll not be a stranger.”
