SAUCHIE JUNIORS demolished Rosyth 8-0 in a spectacular performance for their opening League Cup match at the weekend.
After a disastrous start to their season Sauchie Juniors have turned their form around and are now consistently putting in good performances. Saturday’s League Cup match against Rosyth was no exception.
With only three players in the starting XI that were in the 5-1 win against Troon the previous weekend, it might have appeared as if Sauchie were fielding their B team.
As it turned out, manager Fraser Duncan was just flexing his squad’s depth.
It only took Sauchie 14 minutes to get their first goal after a great ball from Ross Kavanagh found Ross Crawford, who did well to weather the challenges from the Rosyth defence, as he dribbled into the box and cut it back to Kavanagh who blasted the ball into the top right of the net.
Sauchie’s second came from the penalty spot as Crawford was brought down in the box after he controlled the ball from a clearance and nipped it past the defender who clumsily tripped him as Crawford went past him.
Conor Kelly stepped up to take the penalty kick as Sauchie’s penalty specialist Danny Smith was on the bench. Kelly calmly put the ball straight down the middle as Rosyth’s keeper dived to the right.
Two minutes later and Sauchie were awarded a second penalty as Kelly swung in a cross to find Ross Hutchinson at the back post who was brought down by Rosyth’s keeper as he attempted to volley the ball.
Crawford stepped up for the second penalty and, just as Kelly did two minutes earlier, he put the ball straight down the middle with the keeper diving to the right again.
Kavanagh was back on the scoresheet with five minutes left in the first half as Sam Davidson swung in a deep ball from the corner flag to Kavanagh at the back post.
Kavanagh slipped after controlling the ball but luckily for him so did the defender and he was able to find his feet and slotted the ball through the keeper’s legs for his second goal. It was a woeful first half for Rosyth that was summed up with Sauchie’s fifth goal just minutes before the break.
Kavanagh turned from goal scorer to provider as he whipped in a low cross that bobbled its way along the six-yard box to an unmarked Crawford who tapped it in with ease for his second.
Sauchie had their sixth goal less than a minute into the second half as a great run from Kavanagh on the right flank freed up space for Davidson and Kavanagh cut the ball back to Davidson on the edge of the box and he drilled the ball into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later Davidson repaid the favour to Kavanagh as he latched onto the goalkeeper's miskick and played the ball through to Kavanagh who coolly slotted the ball past the keeper for his hat trick.
Not to be out done by his teammate, Crawford got his third of the afternoon as Hutchinson whipped in a lovely ball to find Crawford unmarked yet again in the six-yard box and he tapped it in easily.
With Sauchie leading 8-0 with 30 minutes left to play The Reds were still playing good attacking football and were creating chances but there were no more goals to add to their haul.
The game ended 8-0 and Rosyth looked thoroughly defeated as The Reds put on a blistering performance that the visitors just couldn’t match.
Sauchie will play their other two League Cup group games this week as they travel to Bo’ness tonight, Wednesday, March 16 before facing St Andrews on Saturday, March 19, as they hope to continue their spectacular run of form.
