HIBERNIAN fans have been waiting over 100 years to see their team win the Scottish Cup.
On Sunday, their women's team showed their male counterparts how it's done.
Alloa's Recreation Park once again played host to the women's Unite Scottish Cup final with Hibs lifting the last domestic honour of the season, defeating Rangers 2-1.
Following five successive league defeats, not many gave Rangers a chance in this match, but they stunned the favourites on 11 minutes taking the lead through Lesley McMaster. A short corner was fired into the box by Lisa Swanson and McMaster poked home past Shannon Lynn in the Hibernian net.
Playing 4-5-1, Rangers were proving hard to break down and were looking to attack Hibs on quick counter attacks. Hibernian, meanwhile, enjoyed lots of possession, but every chance they had seemed to have lady luck working against them.
A Lisa Robertson shot from just inside the box cannoned off the cross bar and Captain Rhonda Jones saw her header from a corner also come back off the upright. A further shot from Robertson came back off the post and Rangers cleared a goal bound effort off the line.
The second half was similar to the first until Hibernian brought on wide player Joelle Murray.
The Hibernian and Scotland midfielder gave her side the width they needed and it was her cross which produced a chance for Laura Kennedy and she headed past Lucy Cook in the Rangers goal to put her side on level terms.
With Rangers beginning to look out on their feet, it seemed only a matter of time before Hibernian scored the winner and with seven minutes remaining this proved to be the case when Jenna Ross headed home another Hibernian cross.
Delighted Hibs boss Willie Kirk said, "I am delighted for the girls and it gives them something tangible for all of their hard work for the last 10 months.
"Going behind so early was not ideal, but at the time I thought it might be good for us as it would spark us into life. However, as the game wore on and we hit the woodwork three times, I was starting to think this was not our day.
"But the girls remained very patient and got the reward they deserved at the end. I am really delighted for them. They have had some outstanding performances in the Scottish Cup this year and deserve their winners medals."
