KEEN chess players around the Wee County got the chance to face off against a grandmaster in a unique event in Alloa.

Resonate Together organised their chess grandmaster event, allowing hopefully enthusiasts to come up against world-renowned Jacob Aagaard.

The Danish-Scottish chess expert touched down in Alloa to take on 25 pros during the event held at Resonate’s Carsebridge headquarters.

The Advertiser spoke with Michelle Briggs, board member with Resonate, who was beaming with pride at how enjoyable the day went for everyone.

“It was an amazing atmosphere,” Michelle said. “There was a lot of excitement on arrival.

“During the contest, there was determination in everyone’s faces to beat the grandmaster.”

Participants registered when they arrived at Resonate before being sat around at desks shaped in a circle.

Each table had a chessboard on it, with Jacob able to walk between each table to make his move, allowing him to combat each player at once.

Michelle continued: “He just moved around the room and made a move before moving onto the next one.

“It was unbelievable to watch and it was amazing.”

A huge upset almost occurred as one individual managed to take their game with Jacob to the wire.

With both players locked in and fighting for a win, the game would ultimately come down to a stalemate.

Michelle added: “It came down to one individual and it ended in a draw. It was pretty exciting.

“Jacob took it very well and he showed a great deal of respect to the chap that managed to play for the draw.”

Resonate hold a chess club on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm, with anyone welcome regardless of experience.
