ALLOA’s annual Christmas lights switch on event will be held next week, promising to be bigger and better than before.
The popular event is organised by Alloa First and marks the beginning of the festive cheer in the Wee County.
Set for Saturday, November 23, Alloa First have managed to secure additional lights and entertainment for this year’s switch-on.
Diane Brown, manager of Alloa First, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to increase the festive lighting this year, adding extra sparkle to Bank Street, Mill Street and the High Street’s permanent trees.
“Although restrictions mean High Street’s lamp-posts can only feature braided lights, they still bring a warm festive glow to the town centre.

“We’re fortunate to afford these lights in challenging economic times, and it’s all thanks to the investment of our local businesses and third-sector organisations who contribute annually through the BID levy.
“While we would love to do even more, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved together and hope everyone enjoys the festive atmosphere.”
Entertainment will be led by Alloa Bowmar Pipe Band and Santa’s Parade, who both set off from Candleriggs at 1pm for the High Street.
The event will culminate with the lighting up of the tree at 4.30pm, with crowds expected to turn up for switch-on.
Further attractions will be held with performances from the Sauchie Choir, Clackmannan District Brass Band, Forefront Stage School, Spotlight Theatre, Park Primary School Choir and the Lochies School Makaton Choir.
Kids can find plenty to entertain themselves, with a funfair to be set up on Mill Street from 11am, Santa’s Grotto at Alloa Hub from 1.30pm to 4pm and Father Christmas himself will be collecting letters from Santa’s Post Box.
Diane also stressed the importance of supporting local businesses where possible throughout the festive period, particularly with the addition of the shop local competition.
This allows shoppers to have the chance to win vouchers any time they spend £10 or more at any participating location.
“We encourage everyone to support our independent businesses,” Diane added. “When you shop locally, you’re helping keep the town centre thriving and contributing directly to the community.”
