A lack of activities for Clackmannanshire’s young people is to be addressed with a new youth club set to open its doors.

The club, set to be hosted within the old Klub21 site, has been brought in to respond to concerns surrounding a lack of representation among young people.

This initiative aims to provide an answer to these concerns – providing a safe space for people aged between 12 to 17, in particular girls and those without sporty interests.

The youth club project has been made possible due to Wasp Community Club receiving funding from the Young Start National Lottery fund, which has provided a grant for one year to make the concept a reality.

With this money, the club plans to provide the value of the youth club in Alloa before applying for further funding to carry the project forward in future years.

Tony McMinn, youth development coordinator, is overseeing the project alongside a dedicated staff team.

He said: “We are aiming to create an ‘edgier’ type of youth club where people can feel safe, control the agenda for the club, and still get the support of staff when required.

“We have many plans for the future but initially we just want it to be a place that’s fun, welcoming and in demand.”

Promoters have held extensive interactions with young people in Alloa, who have shared that they feel there is a shortage of available and fun activities.

The youth club aims to provide a space for everyone, addressing a range of interests including sports, creative arts, club live music nights, computer gaming, DJ workshops and excursions.

Ensuring that young people are integral to the club’s success, there are aims to establish a committee at the youth club, made up of those who attend.

This committee will be responsible for making decisions on activities, programmes and budget, designed to encourage active participation.

To help make the project a reality, the Wasp Community Club has received funding from the Young Start fund from the National Lottery.

The youth club will also work alongside local organisations and businesses to maximise resources.

The Wasp Community Club is actively seeking sponsors, donations and volunteers for work on the new club.

Anyone interested in lending a hand can is urged to contact Tony through Wasp Community Club on 01259 219596.
