A WEE COUNTY fire station will open their doors this weekend to give the public an insight into how it operates.

Alloa Fire Station will be hosting their annual open day, this Saturday, August 17 from 1pm-4pm, with the team in place all day to welcome visitors.

Families and kids are urged to come along, with young ones invited to sit in the fire engine itself and see what it’s like to be a firefighter.

Nicholas Webb, watch commander at Alloa Fire Station, told the Advertiser: “We try and do it every year and we’re wanting to let the community come in and have a look at the fire appliances.

“We’ve had our fleet of appliances here, but we’ll also have special appliances as well from the police, ambulance service, mountain rescue.

“It’s not just ourselves on the day, it’s the whole emergency services here as well with their vehicles.

“We’ll have various stalls set up and we’re holding a raffle for the Firefighters’ Charity.

“It’s good for the public to come in, bring their kids and let them have a climb in the fire appliances and have a look around.”

In addition to the family fun on the day, the fire station will also be holding a recruitment drive for on-call firefighters.

This is in response to a shortage in the Stirling and Clackmannanshire area, with Alloa Fire Station hoping to bolster their numbers of on call responders.

Nicholas added: “We’re also doing some recruitment for our on call firefighters in the area – we’ve got an on call fire engine here at Alloa and in Tillicoultry.

“We’re always trying to recruit volunteer firefighters so we’ll really be pushing that on the day as well.”
