KIDS at a Wee County nursery have been demonstrating for their right to feel safe as they asked Clacks Council to repaint double yellow lines on the road nearby.

Glenview Nursery, in Tullibody, has been exercising their status as a Rights Respecting Nursery by teaching their pupils all about road safety.

As part of the kids’ learning, they pointed out that their vision on the road is often obstructed by cars parking outside the building where they shouldn’t.

Nursery staff knew that double yellow lines were meant to be painted there and so the children came up with the idea of asking the council to repaint the lines.

Heather O’Hagan, owner and manager of Glenview, said: “We’re a Rights Respecting Nursery and part of that involves helping the children to understand that they are global citizens.

“At our age, we try to keep that really simple so we wanted to show the children that they’ve got the right to make a change.

“We wanted to show them that they could make a difference themselves and so the children told us it was hard to cross the road due to the parked cars.

“I knew that when the nursery first opened, there were double yellow lines outside and so we did some research to show them what they were and what they meant.

“We asked them what we could do and they said they wanted to paint them themselves.”

The kids and the nursery staff then came up with the idea of contacting Clackmannanshire Council to request the lines be repainted.

The council honoured their request and sent a paint truck out, with two council workers repainting the lines while the children got to watch.

Heather explained that the kids felt very excited getting to see their plan come into fruition and felt they had made a real difference.

She added: “The council were great, they came back to us straight away and did it as quick as they could.

“When the van turned up, the kids were all excited to see the two guys who seemed very confused at the excitement.

“The kids made posters and they were all so pleased that they had had this idea and it had actually happened.”
