A COUPLE from Tillicoultry last week marked a major milestone as they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

William and Wilma Lawson tied the knot at Tillicoultry Parish Church on July 25 in 1964 and marked 60 years of marriage last Thursday.

The couple are teenage sweethearts, having met at a youth club all those years ago.

To help mark the anniversary, they received a visit from Clackmannanshire Deputy Lord Lieutenant Stephen Roe as well as Cllr Jane McTaggart on the day.

They also enjoyed a weekend away with family to help celebrate the past six decades.

William, 79, was a labourer in his working life, starting at the Whins and later finishing at Marshall Construction.

Meanwhile 78-year-old Wilma, nee Duncan, worked at Paton’s mill and in a variety of shops around the town.

Both were familiar faces at Tillicoultry Golf Club which they used to frequent while William was also a talented footballer.

Highlights over the years included holidays abroad while the pair worked hard to provide for their family.

Nowadays, William and Wilma are both involved in charities Liam’s Gift and a memorial fund for Aiden Joyce supporting Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), both good causes in the memories of two of their grandsons.

“They cannot work without each other”, the couple’s daughter Lorraine Joyce told the Advertiser.

“They’ve enjoyed all their holidays abroad, I think they miss that.

“They are just hard working people, worked hard to give us the upbringing that we’ve had.”
