A WEE COUNTY primary school has come second in a national competition to design a miniature pocket garden.

The annual Pocket Garden Design Competition, launched by Keep Scotland Beautiful, asked school pupils to create their design inspired by nature’s engineers such as birds, beavers or bees.

From the hundreds of entries received, 30 finalists were chosen across 19 local authority areas, with one Clacks school standing out.

Redwell PS finished second in the public vote, which received thousands of votes fed back to the organisers.

A spokesperson for Keep Scotland Beautiful described Redwell’s design, which was named Bee-ing an Engineer.

They said: “Human engineers use teamwork and good communication to solve problems and so do bees.

“This is reflected in this design, for example, when a hive gets too warm, bees use their wings as fans to circulate cooler air, so the children created mini fans that move in the breeze.

“A bee skep is surrounded by a ring of hexagonal containers, each one dedicated to an aspect of bees and providing bee friendly food and shelter.”

The school set off to bring their design to life, with the pupils building and growing their garden to appear in the national online showcase.

Their design ticked all the boxes which included having their design include food for people, good for wildlife and reusing items.

Eve Keepax, senior education and learning officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Every year we are delighted to receive wonderfully inventive and creative pocket garden designs and this year was no different.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part for creating these magical designs, and say a huge congratulations to all out winners.

“I’m already looking forward to next year’s competition.”
