WORKS are shortly to resume on a project to create a high-quality recreational space in Clackmannan following the discovery of asbestos on site.

The hazardous material was discovered during initial works at the Clackmannan Pump Track site in the town’s King George V Park.

The local authority has confirmed the discovery in several areas of the site after testing was completed.

The contaminants have already been removed safely and work is set to resume shortly on the £139,000 project.

A spokesperson for Clackmannanshire Council told the Advertiser: “During initial works at the pump track site in Clackmannan’s King George V Park, the council's contractor came across evidence of unrecorded asbestos in several areas, confirmed after testing.

“All contaminants discovered have been safely removed.

“The site compound is secure and work will recommence very shortly.”

The project is being taken forward by contactors On Track and will see an asphalt surfaced circuit with undulations and banked turns.

The track will be available for wheeled sports such as biking, skateboarding and scooting, primarily aimed at young people but also able to cater to a wide variety of users.

The project is being funded through the Scottish Government’s Place Based Investment Fund, along with sportscotland who have provided a grant of £50,000.

Residents have been campaigning to bring the pump track to Clackmannan and previously had the chance to help shape the final design, which was revealed earlier in May.
