A WEE COUNTY teenager has heaped praise on Connect Alloa for putting him on the road to a much "brighter future".
The Clacks youth charity was set up tackle social isolation and loneliness among young people.
It has been a lifeline for youngsters in the area, including Maryk Malkiewicz, who feels better equipped to achieve more in life now.
The 16-year-old, from Alloa, has highlighted Connect for helping to bring him out of his shell and now hopes to help others as a mentor.
The charity has recently been awarded almost £100,000 from the National Lottery's Young Start Fund, which will ensure others are support through the service for the next three years.
Maryk is just one of the many who have benefited from the charity, after joining the group more than four years ago.
He said: "I didn't have much confidence at all before joining Connect, I was really shy – which is strange to think now as no one who knows me would describe me as shy.
"Once I found Connect, I started to come out of my shell as I got more and more involved with the activities and started to have input about the group.
"Connect has helped me grow as a person. I've been able to make friends and feel comfortable and confident in myself.
"I've got some certificates through work we've done at Connect including a first aid one which certifies that I know what to do if someone's having a seizure, and I'm also a mentor.
"There are all things I've been able to put on my CV and college application. I know it will help me have a brighter future – whatever I decide to do."
Young Start helps young people aged 8-24 to become more confident and play an active part in realising their potential.
Dave Crozier, the connect and grow project leader for the charity, said: "I know Maryk is a great mentor in the group and a positive influence and support for many other young people who attend.
"I know if I need support as a staff member he will be there and he's always looking for opportunities to learn more and help where he can.
"If he keeps moving in this positive direction, I can really see him becoming an amazing youth or community worker."
