A VOLUNTEER for the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) has been commended for her efforts at the charity.
Janice Falconer started volunteering at the national wildlife rescue centre in Fishcross two years ago after a lengthy career at NHS Forth Valley.
She said: “I decided to volunteer with the Scottish SPCA because it aligned with my interest in animals and nature.
“I feel the aim of the society to rehabilitate and release animals back into the wild is something to be supported.
“Having worked clinically in the NHS, I felt that dealing with sick and injure animals might not be that different from dealing with people – careful handling and treatment, encouragement and soothing ruffled feathers!”
The Falkirk resident volunteers mainly with the bird section but has recently started tending to small mammals.
Janice is an appointed mentor for other helpers in the bird section, which has seen her recognised by the charity ahead of Volunteer Week.
“I particularly enjoy working in the bird section as there is so much variety from the tiniest nestling to majestic birds of prey,” Janice added.
“Volunteers can be involved in all aspects of care including hand feeding, identifying birds requiring veterinary attention, bathing birds and release.
“The best part of the job is releasing animals back into the wild knowing that the staff in the centre have worked hard to get them there and the volunteers have assisted in that process.”
