THE environment took centre stage at a Tullibody school last week as children and parents came together for a community litter pick.
Young people and parents took up litter pickers to clean up around Tullibody South Campus on Thursday, March 30, afternoon to take care of the environment.
There was an emphasis on the environment in the classroom throughout the week with Miss Laura Powell's class inviting families along to help out on the day.
All classes learn about looking after the planet, reducing rubbish and recycling and the young people have been passionate about taking action on litter in their area.
Miss Powell's class led the charge last week, reminding people to put their litter in the bin and drumming up support for litter picks with other classes also adding their share for the effort.
The P3 teacher told the Advertiser: “Other classes have been involved as well and lots of people said they'd like to continue litter picking after the holidays.”
She added: “It was great, we had loads of families coming along to help after school – there were lots of people helping which was great and they all seemed to enjoy it.”
There are hopes for litter picks on a more regular basis, the children having seen first-hand just how much rubbish can build up in an area.
The event came after environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful called on people to help tackle the litter emergency across the country with its Spring Clean campaign.
Across the country, dozens of schools and community groups registered events in all 32 local authority areas.
Miss Powell added: “There was a very positive feel about it round about the school.
“I think a lot of people felt they can be proud of the school.”
The Keep Scotland Beautiful Spring Clean campaign continues until April 17.
Charity CEO Barry Fisher said: “The litter issue across Scotland is as bad as it has ever been and the best way to tackle the problem is for more people to work together, and for us to collectively show the ground swell of support for more strategic action to turn the tide on litter.
“Spring Clean is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to make an impact.
“Every action, however small, makes a difference.”
