AN INDEPENDENT Scottish record label hopes to make its mark in the music industry.
Derek Miller, founder of 5 Pin Din Recordings, is aiming to give the label a strong presence by distributing solid songs by interesting artists.
He said: “Due to the music industry's stagnant approach to finding new music, an avalanche of independent labels has sprung up.
“These labels are determined to get their music heard and bypass the archaic and frustrating system of A&R that operates within large record companies.
“Many of these labels, including 5 Pin Din Recordings, are a direct descendent of the punk ethos of ‘doing it yourself’. True independents.
“This has not only become a viable way of releasing music but a necessity for most musicians, including myself.
“Factory, 4AD, Mute, Rough Trade and Creation set the benchmark. We'd like a seat at the table.”
Based in Livingston, West Lothian, 5 Pin Din Recordings is in the process of looking for potential talent to nurture.
Derek noted: “Initially, we are looking to release singles and EPs only as albums are too expensive and have a tendency to really slow momentum.
“We are also looking at film and TV sync opportunities to generate capital for all concerned.
“Management is something we will be looking into latterly.”
Derek has been involved in the industry for around 30 years.
He said: “My first band Limited Conspiracy lit the blue touch paper and I've been hooked ever since. I've had the fortune to work with some great artists in that time - Pet Shop Boys, Section 25, Dynasty Electrik, Paul Haig and Peter Hook to name a few. It's the undiscovered talent out there that really attracts and excites me though.
“The new Outernationale EP, ON, has received great reviews and that justifies all the hard work. The label excites me. The possibility of finding and breaking an important act is paramount for any label and we're no different. Too many 'business' people running music just now but this is a label run by musicians, first and foremost.”
Over the next 12 months, Derek aims to establish 5 Pin Din Recordings as an interesting and productive vehicle for all involved. As well as recruiting new talent, the label will be releasing a handful of remixes.
Derek added: “Next up is a very special Outernationale remix of You Don't Know This About Me by Peter Hook's Freebass project. It features Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division), Andy Rourke (The Smiths) and Mani (Stone Roses).”
As well as musical talent, the label is also on the lookout for photographers, video directors and graphic artists.
