TASMINA AHMED-SHEIKH failed to get re-elected in the Ochil and South Perthshire constituency after losing out to Conservative candidate Luke Graham.
Ms Ahmed-Sheikh managed just 19,110 votes, a figure which was 3,359 less than the tally achieved by Mr Graham.
In her concession speech, she said: “It’s been a privilege to represent this constituency for the past two years and I would like to thank my amazing staff who we should all spare a thought for this evening, who have worked for me over the two years and everyone involved in the campaign, including my election agent Dave Lewis who was the campaign manager.”
The former SNP MP took the opportunity to criticise the prime minister for making a poor judgement in calling a snap election.
She said: “In terms of where we are politically, Theresa May called this election to strengthen her hand in terms of Brexit negotiations.
“Clearly that hasn’t worked and Theresa May is clearly on a shoogly peg to use a Scottish phrase.”
Ms Ahmed-Sheikh tried to remain positive in what was ultimately a disappointing night for her by refocussing the attention on to her party.
She added: “What is most important is that my SNP colleagues across Scotland will continue to win seats in this election tonight and that means that Scotland’s voice will be heard and that the Scottish Parliament will be respected.”
